What do you do with your race finisher’s medals? Do you put them in a box? Do you hang them on hooks for everyone to see?
Well, ever since I saw a photo of a Christmas tree with many finisher medals dangling from it on FB, I have been obsessed with wanting to try my hand at decorating one. I just thought the concept was so creative, not to mention seductively niche but with kitsch! A holiday tree that only a runner could love.
Since my best friend (who runs regularly with me) celebrates the season and she’s not had a tree in literally years, I egged her to get one. After she finally caved in, we scoured the town looking for the cheapest fake fir tree we could find. Nothing makes you more creative than shopping on a shoe string budget!
Wanting to keep the decorations simple, we spent around RM26 securing a 4-foot tall tree, along with some colorful ball ornaments, string lights and a snowman in place of a star at the top of the tree. Coupled with a box where my BFF kept her medals, we were set.
Here is the end result. There really was no design strategy. We call the method free-form-and-hope-it-doesn’t-suck-too-much. 🙂
There aren’t many medals, only 16 (since we started running races last year). But seeing them on the tree made us excited, like little kids.
Here’s some pretty close-ups.
Lastly, here is the tree in the dark with the string lights on. Awesome!
Have a safe and merry holiday season! 🙂
